Sustainable Story

Sustainable development, social progress, environmental protection: these concerns have been at the heart of Lafarge's strategy since its inception, over 170 years ago.

The environmental footprint of buildings needs to be reduced throughout their lifecycle in order to respond to the challenges of climate change. Lafarge follows a rigorous methodology, invests in innovation and brings together all its partners to develop solutions promoting sustainable and efficient construction solutions.

Buildings represent nearly 40% of global energy demand. Reducing constructions' environmental footprint is an essential tool in fighting climate change. At least 80% of a building's energy consumption occurs during its use. It is therefore vital to improve its performances throughout its lifecycle.

To do this, Lafarge has developed an approach based on 3 priority focuses:

  • economizing energy consumption;
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • keeping construction costs as low as possible, while improving structures' other environmental and social footprints as much as possible.

Environmental Benefits

The environmental benefits of Hydromedia are:

  • Manages stormwater efficiently and reduces demand on infrastructure, rapid water removal and safe dry surfaces.
  • Sustainable Urban Drainage, minimizes urban impact on natural water cycle.
  • Filters particulate including pollutants (metals and hydrocarbons) from stormwater.
  • More efficient use of land (reduced footprint)
  • Provides natural groundwater recharge in urban environments.

Benefits of using the Envirocrete product range include preserving non-renewable natural resources and reducing CO2 omissions.

Green Product Range

Hydromedia is a unique and effective means to address important environmental issues and support green, sustainable growth. By capturing stormwater and allowing it to seep into the ground, Hydromedia is instrumental in recharging groundwater and reducing stormwater runoff. This pavement technology creates more efficient land use by eliminating the need for retention ponds, swales, and other stormwater management devices. In doing so, Hydromedia has the ability to lower overall project costs on a first-cost basis.

The Green Building council of South Africa is the official certification body of buildings under the Green Star rating system. The aim of the GBCSA is to ensure that all buildings are built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way so that all South African's work and live in healthy, effective and productive environments. Lafarge's Envirocrete range of concrete can be tailored to meet required green star ratings. This is done by minimising the portland cement content and using cement extenders for example slag and fly ash, as well as by using recycled aggregates.
